Different women have different ages when they should begin getting mammograms. Your OB/GYN should tell you. DO IT! And once you start, go every year. Don't believe the hype - it can be uncomfortable or unpleasant, but it is over in a flash. The techs know what they are doing, and will do their best to make it as quick and painless as possible.
I mentioned to the Radiologist, Dr. L, that since both of my parents had dealt with cancer, I assumed I was at an increased risk. She informed me that, to date, there does not seem to be any correlation between breast cancer and family history. So a cancer-free background does not mean you don't need a mammogram.
I am a big believer in the power of the tribe. I could not do this by myself. Life can be difficult; loved ones make it easier. I am aiming to be as open, honest, and transparent about this experience, in the hopes that it will help someone else. I know I have been helped greatly thanks to others before me who have graciously shared their experiences.
